Malaysian Services Overview
The services sector is an important component of Malaysia's economy. The services sector in Malaysia remain strong and continue to be the main contributor to Malaysia's GDP, 55% in 2008 compared with 53.6% in 2007. The sector accounts for 57% of the total employment in Malaysia.

The concerted development of the services sector is part of the national development strategy to venture into new growth areas and broaden the economic base for exports. It is also expected to provide the basis for sustained rapid growth of the economy to achieve the vision of becoming a developed nation by 2020.

Given the greater role of the services sector over the years, Malaysia has moved into the third stage of economic development.
The services sector targets under the Industrial Master Plan (IMP3) (2006-2020) are :
  • Non government services to grow at an average annual rate of 7.5%
  • Construction services at 5.7%, and
  • Total investment requirement of RM687.7 billion or RM45.8 billion per annum
Malaysian services sector has grown from strength to strength and has achieved global recognition for several landmark projects. Many Malaysian service providers have developed the expertise, capability and capacity to become suppliers of a range of services, both for the domestic and overseas markets.
